Since the start of the year I have been hearing rumors that Bamboo was going to perform at some major event. On a press release that I read, the entire line-up of musicians were written down except his name and then at the end of the article it said “and a surprise special guest”.
That was it. Who else could it be? Although I was told that they already mentioned this in TV commercials, but who cares if it was a surprise or not. Firsts and lasts are the best thing there is. Last December I wasn’t able to take the last performance of Bamboo the band in 19 East because I was having an emotional fit with my camera.
I did not take photos of all the performances in the festival, something I regret given that there were so many surprises, but I was backstage and made sure that my pass said ALL ACCESS (I was doing some project I thought of just then when I saw Karl Roy eating friend chicken before performing as P.O.T. but I’ll let you guys know what it is when I’ve completed it).
I searched for Bamboo everywhere knowing he was around because Kakoy Legaspi, who plays guitars for him now was in sight and the orchestra that was going to play with Bamboo was already setting up their instruments. I couldn’t find him.
I saw Kakoy again last night for the nth time (because he’s a serial session guitarist like that and he seemed to be in all the noteworthy events playing with different musicians). I asked him if he had seen Bamboo throughout the event, he said that he only saw Bamboo during soundcheck and only on stage for the set, after that Bamboo disappeared.
I remember seeing him perform at the 2005 NU107 Rock Awards. He was seated quietly in a corner waiting for his turn to go up. When he goes on stage though, like this time around, you can feel his command of the crowd, who didn’t get that all rowdy, but was pulled into attention, similar to what you get when you are star struck.
There are many frontmen out there who can be hailed by critics as a great performer, but you can’t deny the fact that Bamboo is THE complete package: Good looks, heavenly voice, astounding charisma and that extreme mysteriousness no one can seem to strip down into a formula. He is really an enigma.
His new album “No Water No Moon” will be out soon under Polyeast Records. You can listen to his latest single “Questions” on his site.
Dong Abay was Sandwich’s surprise guest at the RRF. They performed “Perpekto” and “Tsinelas”. While Raimund Marasigan played drums, I couldn’t see where Mike D went.
Oh and DID YOU KNOW that they did not rehearse for this AT ALL?
Pretty awesome fact I just found out.

What you’re about to read was written by the 22-year old version of me in my old blog in Livejournal. I think, if you see most entries about Bamboo in this blog, I really give myself away and STOP being professional and start becoming a gushing fan, which I think would make me lose any possibility of working with him (yes, i’ve said that so many times). Also the fact that sometimes I lose so much sense in my sentences because of too much excitement.
I guess you can say it’s an “artistic crush” like how Quentin Tarantino usually refers to it.

Last night during Bamboo’s first performance in the Philippines in front of almost 80,000 people at the Tanduay Rhum Rock Fest, I remembered that fan in me when I first started working in music and realized that the reason why I am here, is because of people like him.
I saw him the night before they announced the band was breaking up at Mark Escueta’s birthday party. I didn’t understand the meaning of ‘It’s not goodbye’, but last night with an orchestra and awesome musicians to back him up, I saw him perform here for the first time since.
As a photographer, selecting photos require a sense of detachment for you to be able to choose what photographs you get to show the world. To be honest, I am having trouble choosing. I am human after all and a music fan at that, sometimes a little too much. Sometimes maybe I can be a little creepy sounding, but I know what fans feel and every single time I see Bamboo I am reminded of my beginnings as an artist who works for music and I don’t think it’ll ever go away.
Now let’s travel back in time with an entry I wrote 6 years ago….

Tanduay Rhum Rockfest Press Conference
29 September 2011 —
Yesterday I walked to Century Park Hotel from my house. It was a gloomy day and thank God the rain stopped. I arrived early and saw the Warner Music Philippines peeps who helped organize the event because they were distributing the compilation album NGAYON which I heard will be sold on the day of the festival.

With Roanna, sad that she’s probably not hosting the Rock Fest. I think they need someone as badass (and with rock credibility) as her to do the job well.
The stars slowly started arriving…
