Found an article written by Quark Henares in the year 2000 on the state of Pinoy Rock.
This was supposed to be a surprise for Quark last year for his birthday, but when I told him that I had a surprise he said I just ruined it. So I delayed it until he probably forgot that I had something for him by now.
Quark says, “Do You remember the time when the Eraserheads would outsell Ariel Rivera? You should”. That sentence is all sorts of win. I keep reading this article again and again and having been too young before (I was in 7th grade in 1997 sheltered in an all girl Catholic school), I notice that there’s not much difference now — We’re still curious, wondering, planning on the next step assessing which bands made a mark and who’s going to grab that empty throne in the years to come.
Also I really love seeing the old photos of Razorback and Greyhoundz on page 2, and reading about Slapshock and Cheese and all the other bands. It gives me goosebumps every time.
Rakenrol

Rakenrol is a film directed by Quark Henares which he co-wrote with Diego Castillo. I’ve been waiting for this film for so long (years actually), that I’m really happy it’s going to be shown in theatres soon!
I was able to see the intro of this film and saw several of my photos on the screen. It’s an amazing feeling. I remember giving Quark the CD of my most prized photos, wrote on it saying something like, “DO NOT LOSE THESE PHOTOS, THIS IS MY LIFE!”
I hope you kept that CD safe Quark. My heart will break if I see it somewhere LOL. But I know the fortress that is your home is impenetrable.
Quark even tweeted something really sweet after he went through my collection!

Haha this is my plea for someone to take notice and give me a book deal!
This film will be the closing entry for this year’s Cinemalaya on July 23. In the same night there will be a mini music festival in Harbor Square by the CCP Grounds! More details on the poster or check the facebook page

Synopsis:
Odie and his best friend Irene are two outsiders who find a second home in the Philippine underground music scene. The two decide to form a band and put together an unlikely crew that consists of the school bully, an ex-punk-turned-barista, and a former-childstar-turned-band-manager. The film follows their misadventures as they face satanic S&M bands, samurai swindlers, narcissistic rockstars, the pretentious Philippine art community and the freakiest music video auteur ever.
Co-written by Diego Castillo, the guitarist of one of the Philippines’ biggest rock bands SANDWICH, and directed by multi-awarded music video director Quark Henares, Rakenrol is a heartfelt ode to the underground scene both filmmakers spent their formative years in.
